Capitol Police is currently seeking a potential active shooter at the US Capitol, causing the Senate office buildings to be placed on lockdown following a ‘concerning’ 911 call.
Staff members have been instructed to take shelter in their offices and keep their phones on silent.
At 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Capitol Police tweeted, “Our officers are conducting a search in and around the Senate Office Buildings in response to a concerning 911 call.”
“Please avoid the area as our investigation is ongoing. We will continue to provide updates to the public here.”
Capitol Police also confirmed that there are no verified reports of gunshots.
Congress is currently on break, resulting in most senators not being in Washington, D.C.
The House Sergeant at Arms has issued a message to staff members confirming that Capitol Police are addressing a ‘Potential Internal Security Threat in the Senate Office Buildings.’
They have advised people to ‘stay away from the area’ and check for further updates.
A video shared on social media depicted Senate staff members exiting the Russell Senate Office Building while accompanied by police officers.
Some of them had their hands raised as they left the government building.
As of 3:15 p.m., Capitol Police were still urging staff members to remain in place as they continued their investigation.
However, the D.C. Metropolitan Police stated that it ‘seemed to be a false alarm’ and no shooter was found.
An official clearance has not yet been issued.
