Rethink classic potato salad with Ree Drummond's Grilled Potato Salad. The Pioneer Woman boils potatoes before putting them on the grill.

2 min readIt’s peak potato salad season and Ree Drummond, the host of The Pioneer Woman, has a twist on the classic barbecue side dish. She combines grilling and potato salad to create her recipe for Grilled Potato Salad.
The Pioneer Woman’s Grilled Potato Salad is ready in 40 minutes
Considered an “easy” recipe by Food Network, this potato salad recipe from Drummond is a little more involved than the typical potato salad. As the name says, it includes using the grill to cook the potatoes.
However, despite having an added step, the recipe takes well under an hour to prepare. According to Food Network, the potato salad is ready in 40 minutes with only half of it considered “active.”
So while it does involve the grill, making this potato salad isn’t that much more complicated than any other potato salad recipe. An added bonus? It doesn’t have to sit in the fridge before serving.
Ree Drummond boils the potatoes before grilling them
The Pioneer Woman doesn’t cook the potatoes — she uses baby Yukon golds cut in half — exclusively on the grill. She gives them a head start by boiling the potatoes on the stove until tender “so you don’t have to worry about cooking them from the raw state,” Drummond explained on The Pioneer Woman.
Then the Food Network star drains the potatoes and grills them for approximately three minutes on each side. Making the recipe at the Drummond ranch in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, the Pioneer Woman grilled the potatoes on a grill pan but an outdoor grill can give them “some great color,” she added.
One important tip to remember which Drummond noted on her show? Don’t set the potatoes aside to cool for too long. One of the key elements to this potato salad is to combine the potatoes with the dressing when they’re still hot.
“The whole point is you want to make the dressing and toss the potatoes while they are still nice and hot,” she said.
So pull the potatoes off the grill and move right ahead with the creamy mayonnaise and sour cream-based dressing. Other crucial tips include being sure to salt the potatoes before they go on the grill — Drummond points it on The Pioneer Woman — and toss in cooled veggies at the end.
